Debra Newby - Owner, Teacher and Director of Up and Over Educational Services
Debra has been passionate about teaching, coaching and organizing for many years. As a college student, she worked as a Park Recreation Leader teaching dance, sports and art as well as organizing day camps for elementary-aged children. She also prepared and taught summer science classes and led family tide pool tours while working at Cabrillo Marine Aquarium as an educational assistant.
After receiving her degree in zoology and chemistry, she earned her California Teaching Credential and began teaching in the public schools. Later, with three young children at home, she taught part-time for various private schools while homeschooling her own children from kindergarten through high school. This experience prepared her to teach multiple subjects to students with various learning styles.
In her “spare time,” she tutored and taught small group classes, directed choreography and drama for large children’s musicals, and organized and called dances for Civil War Balls. Debra currently works part-time for Atascadero Unified School District, coaches and tutors individual students, mentors young adults and parents, manages projects and organizes educational and historical special events.
"Teaching is my passion, and my goal is to motivate, encourage and build up each of my students and give them the tools and confidence they need for a brighter future."
Throughout history, great leaders were mentored by one-on-one tutors who focused on their students’ gifts and abilities, helping them build the skills they needed for their particular destiny and purpose.
Debra is experienced at moving people and organizations forward, coming alongside her clients as their teacher, coach and accountability partner, mentoring them so that they can stay organized and achieve their goals.
Her ability to see the big picture and then break down the task at hand into manageable pieces allows her to move her students and clients forward in a steady, systematic manner. She creates processes and systems to streamline tasks and show measureable results.
She is able to sift through large amounts of information and discern the pattern and details needed. Debra understands time – its possibilities and limitations – and helps clients make it work to their best advantage. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, allow her to understand her clients’ needs and convey the necessary information. As a motivator, she helps her clients see positive and negative consequences of decisions, activities and behaviors, holds them accountable, encourages them and then celebrates their successes when goals are met.
Homeschooling her three children from kindergarten through high school has given her a unique perspective on alternative education. That background coupled with the public school teaching she has done with her California Teaching Credentials in biology and chemistry has given her over twenty years of experience working with a variety of ages and in numerous academic subjects.
Debra has a solid understanding of the Myers Briggs personality types and the ability to recognize her clients’ types which allows her to easily modify her approach to fit each individual’s learning style. As an ENTJ, she is a leader who is enthusiastic, driven and task focused with a willingness to challenge inertia, ineffectiveness and complacency.
As a lifelong student, she is always eager to learn so that she continually has more to give. Her strongest desire is to invest in people and move them forward.
